Not being able to paint your nails during pregnancy is a myth! Many hopeful women stop taking care of their nails for fear that the formulations contained in the manicure products used will negatively affect the health of the expected baby. On the Internet, one can still come across many outdated publications, which further add to the fears of pregnant women. Nevertheless, modern technologies for manufacturing nail care cosmetics are increasingly leaning towards eliminating harmful products and replacing them with products of organic origin or those naturally found in the environment.
Moms-to-be, therefore, can enjoy manicure treatments with confidence. They just need to know which preparations will be completely safe for them and how to use them to achieve optimal results.
Hormonal changes during pregnancy are often the reason for weaker nails and hair.
During pregnancy, women’s bodies undergo many changes in the hormonal economy. These also affect the nails. Some women then complain that their nails become brittle and fragile, while other ladies notice just the opposite changes – their nail plate becomes strong and resistant to splitting. This is because each body reacts differently to hormonal changes. During pregnancy, women use a fair amount of supplements, aimed at passing this period in health, so that the baby will not be harmed either. It is these supplements, that can cause changes in the structure of nails and hair. After the breastfeeding period, hormones mostly stabilize and there is a return to the pre-pregnancy state.
What to do to make nails less brittle during pregnancy – home care
If your nails are brittle and break a lot during pregnancy, you should take more care of them than usual:
- Try to file them as short as possible – don’t worry on short nails you can also put polish and the end result will knock the future dad’s socks off.
- If you do a hybrid manicure yourself, remember to file your nails across the plate and gently round the edges. Thanks to such treatment, the nails will not be frayed, and therefore will not snag, break and split. Then the risk of damage to the nail plate due to mechanical trauma decreases dramatically.
- Ask your doctor to help you arrange a diet rich in minerals, vitamins (especially A, E and B). Avoid highly processed foods because they are not only harmful to hair and nails, but also to the mother and baby’s body.
- Use natural conditioners and nail oils. We recommend paying special attention to the composition of the product and use only those specifics where it is simple and does not contain harmful substances.
What substances in varnishes and conditioners should I avoid during pregnancy?
Do not use nail polish, conditioners and other nail products if they contain:
- Formaldehyde – causes frequent allergies, very bad for skin, liver, respiratory tract, immune system, reproductive system and nervous system
- Formaldehyde resin – irritates skin, eyes and lungs
- Toulene – harmful to respiratory, reproductive and nervous systems, irritation and damage to eyes and skin
- DBP (dibutyl phthalates) – harmful to the endocrine and nervous systems, these substances are now banned in Europe and cannot be used in cosmetics.
- Camphor – reddens the skin, can cause poisoning and sensitization
- Xylene – causes irritation of the mouth and throat, causes headaches and dizziness, can cause heart and liver problems and lead to kidney damage
- Parabens – can’t be used in products that can’t be rinsed off, so they’ll be good in laundry detergent, but not in nail polish
