How to Treat and Prevent Paronychia

      Paronychia: Causes and Symptoms

Paronychia can be caused by both bacteria and fungi that attack the nail fold and surrounding skin. As a result of the infection, the fold becomes red, painful, and swollen. There is often a purulent discharge, indicating an advanced infection. In chronic cases, there is thickening of the perionychium and nail discoloration. Paronychia can spread to adjacent nails and skin, further complicating treatment.

The cause of infection can be various factors, such as:

      • mechanical injuries, e.g., cutting cuticles too deeply,

      – nail-biting habit,

      – wearing tight shoes,

      • contact with moisture and lack of proper hygiene,

      • weakening of the immune system,

      • neglect in nail care.

The nail fungus affects both hands and feet, and if left untreated, it can lead to more serious complications, such as permanent nail damage or the spread of the infection to other parts of the body.

      How to Effectively Treat Paronychia

The most important step in combating paronychia is to take appropriate action as early as possible. If the first symptoms appear, such as pain, redness, or swelling, it is advisable to consult a podiatrist or dermatologist immediately. The specialist will conduct a thorough assessment of the nail condition and select the appropriate therapy.

      Treatment of paronychia includes:

Removal of infected tissues – a podologist can gently clean the nail fold of accumulated pus or dead skin, which helps to halt the further development of the infection.

Anti-inflammatory drugs and antibiotics – in the case of a bacterial infection, a doctor may prescribe a topical or oral antibiotic. For a fungal infection, antifungal preparations in the form of ointments, creams, or varnishes are used.

Home care recommendations – it is crucial to keep nails and skin clean and avoid moisture. A specialist may recommend hand or foot baths in an antiseptic solution, e.g., with the addition of Epsom salt or chamomile infusion, which alleviate symptoms and accelerate healing.

Mechanical or surgical removal – in advanced cases, partial removal of the nail may be necessary to eliminate the source of infection.

Why a Cosmetic Pedicure is Not Enough

Many people mistakenly believe that the problem of paronychia can be solved during a visit to a beauty salon. However, a regular cosmetic pedicure is not an appropriate solution for such a serious infection. Paronychia requires the specialized care of a podiatrist or dermatologist who has the proper qualifications and tools to conduct effective treatment. Attempts to remove the changes on one’s own or improper care can only worsen the problem and lead to more serious complications.

      How to Prevent Paronychia

Prevention plays a key role in protecting against paronychia. Here are a few simple rules worth incorporating into daily care:

      • Avoid cutting cuticles too deeply – it’s better to gently push them back with a wooden stick.

      • Take care of proper hand and foot hygiene by washing them regularly and drying them thoroughly.

      • Avoid wearing tight shoes that can put pressure on the nails and the skin around them.

      • Use moisturizing and regenerating cosmetics that protect the skin from damage.

      • Regularly visit a podiatrist to monitor the condition of your nails and periungual folds.

Bladderwort – a problem not worth ignoring

An ingrown nail can be a painful and troublesome issue, but with proper treatment and prevention, its recurrence can be effectively avoided. The key is a quick response and consultation with a specialist who will tailor an individual therapy. Remember, healthy nails are not only a matter of aesthetics but, above all, comfort and well-being. Do not ignore the first symptoms and take care of your hands and feet with the help of a podiatrist or dermatologist!

We realize that treating paronychia requires patience and consistency. That’s why at Easy Nails, we are always ready to provide you with support and advise you when you should see a specialist. Our goal is to educate clients so they can prevent infection and avoid its recurrence in the future.
