As early as ancient Egypt, around 5000 BC, women adorned their nails using natural dyes. Henna was one of the most popular pigments, giving nails a reddish tint. Egyptians believed that nail color reflected social status. For example, pharaohs and people from higher classes painted their nails in darker shades, while lower social classes chose lighter colors.
