Nail polishes have been with us for centuries. Their history is incredibly fascinating and full of surprising facts. Before we reach for modern bottles full of colorful polishes, it’s worth looking at how it all began. Here is the story of nail polishes from antiquity to the present day.
Ancient beginnings
As early as ancient Egypt, around 5000 BC, women adorned their nails using natural dyes. Henna was one of the most popular pigments, giving nails a reddish tint. Egyptians believed that nail color reflected social status. For example, pharaohs and people from higher classes painted their nails in darker shades, while lower social classes chose lighter colors. Interestingly, Chinese aristocrats around 3000 BC also used nail polishes, creating them from a mixture of gum arabic, beeswax, egg whites, and gelatin. Nail color symbolized power and prestige. Middle Ages and Renaissance
In the Middle Ages and Renaissance, the fashion for painting nails somewhat faded. In Europe, especially among Christian societies, painting nails was considered vanity and excess. However, in Asia, this tradition remained popular. In China, during the Ming dynasty, polishes in shades of gold and silver were used, symbolizing wealth and power.
Modern era of nail polishes
A real breakthrough in the history of nail polishes occurred in the 20th century. In 1920, the first modern nail polish was created, inspired by car paints. It was introduced by the brand Revlon in 1932, offering a range of polishes in various shades. From that moment, nail polishes became an indispensable element of a woman’s cosmetic bag. In the 1950s and 60s, nails were given new life thanks to the fashion for bold colors and patterns. French manicures also gained popularity, becoming synonymous with elegance.
Revolution in ingredients
Contemporary nail polishes differ from their historical predecessors not only in colors but also in composition. In response to growing ecological and health awareness, manufacturers began eliminating harmful substances such as formaldehyde, toluene, or DBP (dibutyl phthalate). More and more brands offer toxin-free, environmentally friendly, and cruelty-free polishes. An interesting solution is hybrid polishes, which combine durability with quick curing under UV lamps.
Current trends
Currently, nail polishes are not just about color but also a way of expressing oneself. Trends change dynamically, and nail fashion reflects contemporary styles and interests. In addition to classic shades, metallic, holographic, and ombre effect polishes are also popular. We increasingly reach for natural, subdued colors that match minimalist aesthetics. What is your favorite style? Do you prefer classic reds, or perhaps a more modern approach to color?
