Liver Cirrhosis: Nail Changes Indicating the Disease

Cirrhosis of the liver is a serious disease that can affect many aspects of our health. The liver, being one of the most important organs in our body, performs key detoxification, metabolic, and storage functions. Disruptions in its work can lead to irreversible changes not only in the organ itself but also throughout the body. One of the lesser-known but significant symptoms of cirrhosis of the liver are changes in the appearance of nails. Let’s consider what changes may indicate this disease and why it is worth being alert to them.

      Nails as a health indicator

Nails, although they may seem only an aesthetic addition, are actually a mirror reflection of our health. Their appearance, shape, and even color can provide a lot of information about the state of our body. Cirrhosis of the liver, as a chronic disease, affects the entire body and does not spare the nails either. Changes in their structure and appearance may be one of the first symptoms we notice.

White spots and lines on the nails

One of the more characteristic symptoms of cirrhosis of the liver are white spots and lines on the nails, known as leukonychia. They can occur in various forms – from small, single spots to lines running along the nail. In the case of cirrhosis, such changes may be related to disturbances in keratin production and protein deficiencies in the body.

Often such changes are ignored or attributed to an improper diet or mechanical nail damage. However, if we notice an increasing number or changes in their appearance, it is worth consulting a doctor. What do you think about this? Do you pay attention to such details?

      Terry’s nails

Another symptom worth noting is so-called Terry’s nails. This change involves most of the nail becoming white, with only the tip retaining its natural color. This phenomenon is often associated with cirrhosis and other liver diseases, such as liver failure.

      Change in nail color

Cirrhosis can also lead to a change in nail color. They may take on a yellowish tint, which is related to the accumulation of bilirubin in the body. Jaundice, being one of the symptoms of cirrhosis, often manifests itself in the color of the nails as well.

Another change we may observe is a darker coloration of the nails, which may be related to blood circulation disorders, also occurring in the case of cirrhosis.

      Brittleness and fragility of nails

Changes in liver structure can affect the metabolism of many nutrients, leading to vitamin and mineral deficiencies. This, in turn, can cause brittleness and fragility of the nails. If we notice that our nails are becoming more prone to damage and breaking, it is worth paying attention to other symptoms indicating liver problems.

      Our opinion at Easy Nails

At Easy Nails, we believe that nail health is not just a matter of aesthetics but primarily the health of the entire body. Therefore, it is important not to ignore any changes that may appear. Regular observation of nails and their health can help detect many diseases at an early stage.

If you notice any of the described symptoms, we recommend consulting a doctor. Remember that early diagnosis can significantly improve prognosis and quality of life. What is your opinion on this topic? Do you have experiences related to changes in nail appearance in the context of health problems? We encourage you to share your experiences and thoughts in the comments.

In Easy Nails’ opinion, taking care of nail health is not only an aesthetic issue but also a health one. Awareness of the appearance and condition of nails can be key to early detection of many ailments, including cirrhosis. Therefore, it is worth being vigilant and responding to any disturbing changes.
