Anemia and Nail Changes: Indicators of Nutrient Deficiencies

Anemia is a condition that can significantly impact various aspects of our health. One of the less obvious but important symptoms can be changes in the appearance of nails. It is worth paying attention to them because they may indicate deficiencies in nutrients such as iron or B vitamins. What else should we know about the relationship between anemia and nails? We invite you to read on.

      What is anemia?

Anemia, also known as iron deficiency, is a condition in which the number of red blood cells or the level of hemoglobin in the blood is too low. Hemoglobin is an iron-containing protein that is crucial for oxygen transport in the body. Iron deficiency is one of the most common causes of anemia. If the body does not receive enough of this element, it cannot produce an adequate number of healthy red blood cells.

      Changes in nails and anemia

Nails can be an excellent indicator of overall health. Changes in their appearance often reflect health problems, including anemia. What symptoms should catch our attention?

      1. Paleness of nails: One of the first symptoms of anemia may be the loss of the natural pink color of the nails. Paleness results from a lower number of red blood cells and a lower level of hemoglobin.

      2. Brittleness: Iron deficiency can lead to brittle nails. They become thin, break easily, and split. This is a sign that the body is not receiving enough essential nutrients.

      3. Koilonychia: This is a condition where the nails take on a spoon shape, with a noticeable indentation in the middle. This type of change is typical for iron deficiency anemia and should be a signal for further diagnosis.

      4. Vertical ridges: Although vertical ridges can appear with age, their sudden appearance may be related to nutritional deficiencies. This is another symptom worth consulting with a doctor.

The importance of diet in preventing anemia

A healthy diet rich in iron and B vitamins is crucial in preventing anemia and related changes in nails. Products such as red meat, fish, eggs, green leafy vegetables, and nuts should be a regular part of our diet. It is also worth paying attention to vitamin C, which increases the absorption of iron from food.

If you suspect you have anemia, consult a doctor. Proper diagnosis and treatment can prevent health deterioration. More about diet and its impact on health can be found on the National Center for Nutritional Education website: ncez.pl.
