Nails. These small canvases at the ends of our fingers have long been a field for expressing personal style and creativity. While for many they are merely a practical part of the body, for others they are a way to stand out and showcase their character. So how have manicure trends evolved over the years? Join us on a fascinating journey through time and styles!

Antiquity – the beginning of the manicure adventure

The history of nail care dates back thousands of years. As early as ancient Egypt, we find the first traces of attention to nail appearance. Queen Nefertiti and Cleopatra herself were known for painting their nails in intense shades of red, using natural dyes such as henna. In China, even before our era, nails were treated as a symbol of social status – the longer and more decorated, the higher the social position of their owner.

Middle Ages – a time of oblivion

In the Middle Ages, the art of nail decoration was not particularly popular. The focus was more on body care as a whole, rather than details like nails. Nevertheless, some historical records indicate that noblewomen used oils and herbs to strengthen and shine their nails.

Renaissance and Baroque – a return to elegance

The Renaissance brought a revival of interest in art and beauty. At that time, nails began to regain their place in the fashion world. Women started using gentle polishing treatments to give their nails a shine. In the Baroque period, with the flourishing of decorative art, the first experiments with various colors and patterns on nails appeared.

      20th century – a manicure revolution

The 1920s marked the time when manicure firmly established itself in beauty salons. The introduction of nail polish in the form we know today revolutionized hand care. In the 1950s, thanks to Hollywood, reds and pinks became fashionable. Actresses like Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn were icons who inspired women worldwide to experiment with colors.

In the 1980s and 1990s, neon colors and geometric patterns became fashionable, perfectly fitting the colorful and extravagant style of those times. Meanwhile, at the beginning of the 21st century, there was a greater focus on naturalness, leading to the popularity of the French manicure style.

Contemporary times – diversity and personalization

Today, in the age of social media, manicure trends change at a dizzying pace. New techniques and styles emerge every month, quickly gaining popularity on Instagram or Pinterest. Currently, we can choose from a wide range of products: from classic polishes, through hybrids, to gels or acrylics. Personalization has become key – we increasingly opt for unique designs that reflect our personality.

      Modern technologies in manicure

It’s impossible not to mention the impact of technology on today’s approach to manicure. Thanks to innovations such as LED lamps for curing hybrids or modern milling machines, the nail styling process has become faster and more efficient. Moreover, the use of eco-friendly products, which are environmentally friendly, is becoming increasingly popular.

      What will the future bring?

What future awaits the art of manicure? Will we witness further revolutions, or will we return to our roots? There is increasing talk of sustainable development and ecological alternatives to traditional products. Perhaps these will become the new standard in the beauty industry?
